Interest Groups at UUEA
Friday Morning Book Club
The Friday Morning Book Club - so-named by one of our founding members, Elizabeth Hamm -meets at UUEA six times each year between September and June. The club began in 2005 with a group of about eight ladies who were all avid readers and wanted to gather to discuss books one or more of us suggested and upon which we had all voted to include in our reading list for that year. After that first year, it has been the tradition that the books and meeting dates for the next year are chosen by the members at our June meeting. This is a casual get-together. Members of the book club need not be members of UUEA, the only prerequisite being that they love reading and sharing what they learned from the books at hand. For further information, please contact Judi G (contact info is in the church directory) or contact us here. Upcoming meeting dates can be found on the church calendar.
New Yorker Discussion Group
For those who enjoy reading and discussing in-depth articles on current, significant US and international issues, the creative arts, personalities and more, the New Yorker Discussion Group offers the opportunity to stimulate the mind, hear multiple points of view, learn, socialize, and laugh a lot. The group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. for about 1.5 hours in the UUEA gathering room. There are no “required readings.” Each member reads any articles, stories, or poems that are of interest and at meetings, share their thoughts, opinions, and experiences (frequently relevant, occasionally irrelevant, and often irreverent). Sometimes one or more members has expertise on a topic, and sometimes the articles have information that is totally new to everyone. All are welcome, but weekly attendance is not required. It’s good for the mind and a lot of fun. Upcoming meeting dates can be found on the church calendar.
Meditation Practice
All members, friends, and first-time visitors are invited to attend. Come meditate for 35 minutes, followed by reflection and conversation. If you have a difficult time meditating on your own, or feel you may not know how, please come, and experience the energy that flows in a group experience. There is no requirement to attend every week. Upcoming meeting dates can be found on the church calendar. Note there will be a break in meetings during the month of August.
Please try to arrive a few minutes before 7 to settle in. Latecomers are asked to enter quietly.
